Rare sighting of humpback whales off New Brighton Pier
A rare sighting of a humpback whale and its calf just off the coast of Christchurch has been captured on film.
South New Brighton resident Hugo Kristinsson, 59, was walking on New Brighton Beach when he spotted what appeared to be a mother humpback whale and her calf about 200 metres off New Brighton Pier about midday on Thursday.
It was the first time Kristinsson had experienced such a sighting in the 29 years he had lived in the coastal suburb.
“It was fascinating and really uplifting. It gives people something to smile about.”
