Christchurch City Council’s Papanui Service Centre will soon become a one-stop shop for people wanting to post letters and pay bills.

Postal services have been offered from the Papanui Service Centre since the start of February, but now agreement has been reached that the centre will become a full agent for NZ Post, meaning it will be able to provide bill payment services.

“We are delighted to be able to expand the range of services we can offer local residents from the Papanui Service Centre,’’ says Council Head of Citizen and Customer Services Sarah Numan.

“It means we will have a convenient one-stop shop where people can access Council customer services, send letters and parcels, and pay bills.’’

This month we’re rolling up our sleeves, putting up our hands, and saying ‘YES’ to giving our time and skills to projects that make Aotearoa a better place to live.

As a mostly volunteer led organisation, our members know first hand the value and impact that a single volunteer can make in our communities. Imagine then how much can be achieved when several volunteers or even an entire street or neighbourhood decide to work together to achieve the same goal!

Whether you plan to coordinate your own volunteer driven activity, take part in one that’s already been setup, participate in National Volunteer Week (16-22 June), or simply show your own volunteers some extra love this month, know that every bit of effort to give back is a priceless investment in all of our futures.

Want to share your thoughts?

Christchurch men have many reasons to celebrate the month of June – thanks to Sport Canterbury and an incredibly generous group of local activity providers who care about men’s health.

“Men’s Health Month is a chance for men across New Zealand to start talking more about their health,” says Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon.

Falloon’s Strength and Balance team promotes the message: “Live Stronger for Longer.” They work closely with strength and balance approved providers who help build strength and mobility.

“We see an increasingly active and fit older population,” Falloon adds. “Unfortunately, there is greater understanding around the value of being active – and less appreciation for how much building strength and balance can improve one’s quality of life."

In June, Sport Canterbury is committed to bringing this message to men across Greater Christchurch, with specific opportunities for over-60s to try new and inspiring activities – at no cost.

Rebecca Logan, who is Sport Canterbury's Community Group Strength and Balance Project Leader, encourages men to make the most of this monthlong opportunity.

“Come and give it a go, and if you enjoy it, buddy up with another participant to become a regular class attendee. Group exercise offers many benefits to men, including improving your strength and balance, which will enable you to live stronger for longer.”

Last year alone, 427 serious injuries claims were made to ACC because of crashes and driving incidents over this long weekend.

Let's make sure we all arrive alive to where we need to go by following these four simple and proven road safety actions:

- Make sure everyone has their seatbelts on
- Remove distractions and stay focused on driving
- Don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or are tired
- Drive at a safe speed for the conditions

With severe and changeable weather forecast for across the country the following winter driving tips are equally important as well.

The only way we can reduce unnecessary road deaths and injuries is by working together to be safe, considerate and alert on the roads. If you spot dangerous driving behaviour or urgent but not life threatening driving incidents you can report it to the New Zealand Police by calling *555 for free from any mobile device.

Have a great long weekend!
