Raised garden beds are ideal for the family to grow your own vegetables or other plants and there are many benefits in using them including

- extending the planting season significantly as the beds will warm faster and hold the warmth
- allowing better drainage
- as the gardener doesn’t walk on the garden bed, the soil doesn’t become compacted
- the soil will remain light and loose allowing it to hold more air helping the vegetable roots to grow with less effort
- ability to reduce the number of weeds
- if using close plant spacing your raised vegetable garden bed will create a micro-climate which will contain moisture and further discourage weeds.

Fill with compost, mulch, good soil and fertilzer mix.

If you are looking for a raised garden bed or planter box see Out of the Woods Woodshop here on Neighbourly.

I have just checked my stored water had nothing growing in it (so it was safe to reuse the bottle), then emptied the bottles rinsed the bottles out and then topped them up to overflowing before putting the lids on. I then changed the date on the bottles and stored them back in the cupboard in the garage.
Remember that you should have AT LEAST 3 liters per person per day and 3 days worth as a minimum. Some suggest that you should have two weeks worth if possible because, when the Alpine Fault ruptures, so much of the South Island will be affected it could take 2 weeks for help to arrive.
Empty fizzy drinks bottles work for storing water, rinse well and fill to overflowing then add lid - just don't use empty milk bottles (wrong type of plastic and you cannot clean them sufficiently - over time microbes from the milk that leeched into the plastic will contaminate your water).
Also check any stored emergency food (we keep all ours in the pantry with the rest of the food - trying to rotate the stock continuously).

We've saved you a seat... so you're invited to come and join us for our Community Lunch, Thursday 12th April 11:30am at Empower Church.

Our guest speaker this month is Craig Dixon, a man with many talents and the face of Foodtogether. His story is how he started this social enterprise, that now operates across NZ.

We always have a great time connecting with others from the community over a 2-course meal, all for a gold coin donation.

Our thanks for the support from Empower Church, City Harvest NZ and St Albans Fruit & Vege Co-Op -(Foodtogether), so a big shout out to these organisations for making this lunch happen.

Thursday 12th April 11:30am I Empower Church 140 Springfield Rd St Albans I Gold Coin Donation.
