West Christchurch residents face 250 hectares of new quarries on their doorsteps
“Welcome to Christchurch, the land of the long grey dust cloud.”
Residents of the city's western suburbs face having 252 hectares of new quarries on their doorstep in 18 months, pending approval from councils and the environment court.
But the community says it is being ground down by the aggregate industry, with quarries allowed to set up shop as near as 90 metres from houses, and spewing what many feel is dangerous dust into the air.
