Vegetation growing out from peoples street side boundaries.

In many cases you have to duck, brush aside or circumvent these obstructions.
There is a LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACT which states that vegetation must not extend past roadside boundaries, but if it does it must be at a minimum of 2.5 metres above the footpath and the grass verge between the boundary and footpath. If it extends over a roadway it must be a minimum of 5 metres above.
There is on the council website an opportunity to report these problems or the council can be contacted directly. Council will inspect and send notification to remedy, but if that is not done within a time frame, council contractors will remedy the problem and the property owner will be billed.
I doubt that many know about these requirements, but if they did I am sure the majority would conform.

Taking the time to talk

Don't end up with;
“If only I had talked to my family about what I want for my funeral”.

It’s not always easy to think about, let alone talk about your own death. But if you take the time to consider how you would like to be fare-welled and talk about it with your family, then you could save your family some stress when the time comes. Instead of having to make decisions about coffin finishes and song sheets, your family can focus on supporting each other in their bereavement.

Tsunami warning sirens to sound on Sunday

Media Team from Christchurch City Council

The sirens will be tested on Sunday at 11am.

They will sound for up to three minutes and will only be heard within a few blocks of the coast between Brooklands and Taylors Mistake.

If the sirens sound for more than 10 minutes it is no longer a test and you should move inland to higher ground.

On the bend of Richardson Tce. approaching the 2 overhead bridges they have become a real danger to road users as they obscure vision of the road ahead. Each year after prompting, contractors come and cut these off. Because they don't poison these plants when they cut them off they grow again next year along with new seedlings. The longer they do this the greater their root systems will become.

A WORD OF WARNING for walkers; they have just been cut off and in many cases a stub several inches long has been left. Be careful as they will trip you up if you don't see them, or if you inadvertently stand on them they could easily penetrate footwear, causing nasty injuries.

Several different approaches could be taken by Council, namely removing the offending trees (which I am not in favour of as if I am correct in identifying them they are beautiful mature exotic specimens.) Digging or pulling the saplings and seedlings out, which in my opinion is impractical, which leaves cutting and poisoning. I am aware many will be against poisoning, which is your belief, but is that belief ill founded ? If you are against poisoning please give a practical cost effective alternative solution.
