However, based on progress up to Tuesday, more than 150,000 water users will have to put up with chlorinated water until at least the end of June, when an ultra-violet treatment plant is due to be commissioned.

Council water supply improvement programme manager Helen Beaumont says the council has not yet "given up on the May target" for taking chlorine out of the city's water supply.

Just a handful of places around New Zealand officially had a "heatwave" this week, despite the often record-setting hot weather.

On Thursday it was Hanmer Forest in North Canterbury that topped the temperature charts, with a stifling maximum of 38.4 degrees Celsius, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

That was the hottest temperature there since records began in 1906, the fourth-equal highest temperature for January of anywhere in New Zealand, and the hottest temperature of this summer so far.

But while most of the country has sweltered over the past five days, the hot spell experienced by many has actually fallen short of official heatwave status.

‘’Update on our delightful duo, now 4 months old, Salem and Luna we adopted 26th Nov. Oh gosh I dont even know where to start lol Salem plays fetch with poms poms, he loves to be held like a baby and smooches faces with an open mouth lol Luna is the explorer, first to do anything with no fear, she was the first to jump into the fridge, first to climb the massive 12 foot tree I have in my yard, terrifying me lol she loves early morning cuddles, like 2am cuddles lol if walking she lyes on your foot smooching n flopping around like a fish. I no longer have net curtains or plants but I the renovations thanks to the kitty crew are totally worth it. They get along fabulously with my wee dog Pickles and are just adored by my daughter Paige n I. They've enriched our lives so much ❤

My parents also adopted a brother n sister from Cat Rescue 5 years ago 😊 my two are completely different he is in your face for loves and wants them whenever where as she is only on her terms and when she wants loves most affectionate wee girl. He has dog traits such as fetch n is clumsy, she is 100% tree climbing, bug hunting feline n so delicate plus very sneaky. They're hilarious and we waste so much time watching them. Hard to think we've only had them in our world for only two months cos we've loved them for a life time ‘’

If you are also looking for a rescue cat/kitten to adopt Cat Rescue use the following three avenues to advertise kittens ready to find there forever homes.:-

1.  Trade me - Cats to adopt
2.  Pet Central stores in Christchurch take in CR kittens for adoption
3.  Catnap Café also have CR kittens and cats for adoption.

Thank you.

Hi neighbours, bring along your picnic to the Second Meeting of the Southern Classic Racing Experience.

This year, we are fortunate to present a round of the fantastic South Island Porsche Racing Series and the return of those exciting and beautifully prepared Formula Juniors from the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

The Historic and Vintage Car Club Class portray the birth of car racing here in New Zealand and while they might be our older racecars, they are not slow out on the track.

Another large class of racing are the Classic Saloons who always present some spirited and close competition on the track, and then of course there are the Classic Muscle who give us the noise and thrills from the big boys. The Rennsport class means German Racing which combines Porsche, BMW and any other German marque and provide a variety in spectacle and speed. The Single Seaters or Formula Libre and Sports and GT’s complete the lineup for the meeting.

Where: Timaru Raceway

Back to school costs

The wonderful Deborah Lemon from Rehua Marae has compiled this comprehensive list of where families can access a bit of help with getting the kids back to school. Thanks, Deborah, for this great work. You can also check out Deborah's website, Navigate Your Way, for a great resource that helps navigate through government and social services.

The Salvation Army can support families with uniform grants, vouchers for stationery and assistance with devices. Contact your local centre to discuss your needs.

The City Mission's back to school programme can help with purchasing uniforms, shoes, stationery and other costs.

The JR McKenzie Youth Fund can provide help where death, sickness, family break up or economic hardship make it difficult for families to meet educational costs. The fund is administered by local Rotary Clubs.

Make It Happen helps Christchurch families with school-related costs including uniform, clothing, fees, school trips, sport, music and cultural activities.

Variety can organise a sponsor for children between 5 and 15. The charity connects donors with individual children. If you'd like to sponsor a child, you can follow the link to learn more. Kidscan also assist children during the year and always need sponsors.

Work and Income New Zealand can offer loans to qualifying applications to cover school costs. You don't have to be on a benefit, but income thresholds apply. If you are on a benefit, you can apply for an advance to help with school costs.

If you're caring for someone else's child and receiving unsupported child benefit or orphan's benefit, you can apply for the school start up payment.

If you live in Papanui, Papanui Rotary's Children In Need Trust can help with small grants, but remember it's only for Papanui residents.

Remember to talk to your school. They should be flexible about families taking a bit longer to purchase some uniform items. Some may offer hardship grants and donations from parents are voluntary by law. If you do pay the donation, you can claim a tax rebate for up to one third of the cost.

Different iwi have funding available for schooling - talk to the individual tribe for details including how to apply.

Contact my staff if you would like to discuss school costs. I am also happy to hear from parents if schools are penalising families for non payment - this should not happen.
