Blueprint for Kaikōura’s future growth to be revealed

Kaikōura’s vision for the future is expected to be out for public engagement soon.

The Kaikōura District Council has been working with consultant Boffa Miskell to develop a spatial plan, which will provide a blueprint for how the town will grow over the next 30 years.

The draft spatial plan will be considered by the council next month before going out for consultation.

The process began in May last year, with the council hosting a series of workshops to get feedback from councillors, key stakeholders, local iwi and the wider community.

‘‘We have been looking at an overall vision of how we want the town to develop,’’ council chief executive Will Doughty said.

‘‘We have developed some core principals and various factors which might influence that growth, including land use, planning constraints, and opportunities for growth and for change.’’

Kaikōura’s population has passed 4000 and has grown at a rate of just over 1.5% over the last three years, he said.

Key issues included affordable housing and an ageing demographic, with the over 65s set to grow to one-third of the population over the next decade.

It raises questions around how to support people to stay in the community and what types of housing will be needed, Doughty said.
Around 30% of the housing stock is owned by people who live outside the district, such as holiday homes and Airbnb.

Doughty said the council has engaged extensively with Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura.

‘‘We wanted to get their input in early in the process and we’ve worked together with the community as well.

‘‘It is really about making sure we hit the right lens around the iwi management plan in the areas of focus coming through in the spatial plan.’’

Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura has been contacted for comment.

SPCA asking dog owners to vaccinate their pups

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Are you a dog or puppy owner? SPCA are urgently calling on you to vaccinate them against parvovirus.

SPCA New Zealand say:
We’re seeing more and more cases of the highly contagious and potentially fatal canine parvovirus (parvo) around the country as we face a third outbreak in as many years. Parvo can remain on surfaces for up to a year, so dogs are at constant risk if they’re unvaccinated, or if their vaccinations lapse. Please ensure your dogs are protected against this heartbreaking illness, and book your vaccines and boosters as soon as possible. It could be the difference between life and death.
