Provincial Growth Fund rejects Franz Josef township move

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

The Franz Josef township faces flooding and serious earthquake risks - but an application to assess whether the West Coast town could be moved has been rejected.

Earlier this year, an application for $2.2 million to assess the viability of a plan to move the entire township 10km away to Lake Mapourika was rejected by the Provincial Growth Fund.

Franz Josef has 330 ratepayers who live locally - but as a tourist hotspot with at least 600,000 visitors a year, it brings in an estimated $350m a year in tourism revenue.

Poll: Should all neighbours have to contribute to improvements?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

An Auckland court has ruled a woman doesn’t have to contribute towards the cost of fixing a driveway she shares with 10 neighbours.

When thinking about fences, driveways or tree felling, for example, do you think all neighbours should have to pay if the improvements directly benefit them?
