Have you lost an old Golden lab

On Tuesday(ANZAC DAY) my son was driving east on Wairakei Road at 7am. Just before the intersection of Greers Rd he saw an old golden lab wondering in the middle of the road. He thought to himself you need to get off the road, then after passing it he heard a thud and in the rear mirror he could see the dogs leg coming out from under a parked car. He ran to the dog but it was badly injured and died quickly. The car that hit it was long gone and because it happened behind him he is unable to identify the car. The dog had no tag or collar but my son says that there was signs that he wore one and could have slipped it to get away. After ringing the police and city council which were unable to come for a while, a woman from the coffee shop just outside where it happened and my son covered the dog.
Today I rang the police and they had picked it up and taken it to the vets to see if it had a chip and then they said it went to SPCA. SPCA have no record of receiving it. CCC has a record of the incident but because the police had picked it up they didn't send anyone and they had no other record of it coming to them.
My concern is that it's owners don't know it has been in an accident and might be still looking. If anyone is missing a lab or if you know of anyone looking for their lab can you pass this information on. If anyone want to contact me they can leave a post here and I can contact them.
Just a quick mention to the person driving the car that hit the dog, please stop and help. I don't think it is an offence to hit an animal but you should do the right things and help it and take it to a vet if possible.
