From dumping ground scenic spot

Mary-Jo from Clutha District

Catlins Promotions has been putting some much needed spit and polish onto a jewel in the Clutha District's scenic crown.
A few years ago, the Catlins Lake at the Owaka end in south Otago was a bit of a tip.
Since dumping began in the 1970s, this spot had become eyesore with old tyres, rubbish and broken glass strewn from the tidal estuary - completely at odds with what was supposed to be a pristine feature of the north Catlins.
Over a two year period, the group has staged a major clean-up of the Clutha District Council-owned site.
Not only that, members and other organisations have been actively involved in re-planting the site in natives.

At the group's working bee this month, more than 500 native trees were planted on the lake shore, with the help of South Otago Farm Forestry Association and South Otago Forest and Bird, with both organisations donating plants.

Other support for the project has come from the council, Otago Community Trust, Papatowai Forest Heritage Trust, Perrins Transport and many local volunteers.
Good job, and thanks for sending in the photos so that the wider community can see what's been happening to develop this site, as a peaceful stop-off and birdwatcher's paradise.
