Clinton scholarship to great allrounder
A South Otago student is $1000 better off after winning a rural scholarship recently.
Clinton born-and-bred Atawhai Hotene, 18, was selected as recipient of the Clinton Young Farmers Scholarship Award during a process that took place late last year, and was presented with her award in the township last week. Club chairperson Mel Dodds oversaw the presentation in front of Clinton's emblematic horse statue on Thursday.
"We're delighted to award this year's scholarship to Atawhai, " Dodds said.
"Atawhai is a great all- rounder, and has done well both in her academic studies and through excelling in sports, representing New Zealand Touch at many levels including, most recently, under-21.
"She's a born-and-bred local, well-known and trusted locally as a friendly and reliable person, and is always available for babysitting and a neighbourly helping hand."
This was the third year the scholarship had been presented, with funding arising mainly from the club's biannual ball.
"When we started the award, we were keen to show that [Young Farmers] are not just about socialising and competition, but about giving back to the community too. We're pleased that through this annual $1000 scholarship we can give a local young person a boost in their studies or career."
Although to date the award had gone to first year students, it wasn't restricted to that group.
"Applicants just have to be 18-plus, local to the Clinton area, and seeking support for an academic or career project. We'd welcome more applicants, who can self-nominate, and the process starts in October each year."
Hotene, who completed her childhood education at Clinton Primary and South Otago High schools, began tertiary studies at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin earlier this week.
"I'm studying Bachelor of Applied Science, Sports Management for three or four years, so the scholarship really helps get me started, " Hotene said.
She hoped her studies would lead to a career in sports, in the strengthening, conditioning and nutrition arena.
"I've also received other scholarships this year, so I'm grateful for all the support I've had locally from people. It definitely makes me more motivated to work hard and succeed."
