Students prompt lower speed outside Kaukapakapa School
Students have successfully lobbied the transport agency to reduce speed outside Kaukapakapa School.
Nearly 5000 vehicles, including milk and logging trucks drive past the school on State Highway 16 every day.
Five per cent are heavy vehicles and Waka Kotahi traffic data indicates that mean operating speeds are higher than the posted speed limit.
Worried about their safety, 50 students wrote submissions to the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency calling for a variable speed limit by their school, in north west Auckland.
The agency responded by setting a variable restriction, lowering the speed limit from 50 km/h to 40 km/h during peak school traffic times.
Do you have any safety concerns about traffic outside other Auckland schools?
What are they?

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
