This urban adventure can be joined at a number of access points; from Shore Road and also via flights of steps that lead down to the bay from a series of Parnell streets. Some parts of the walkway are tidal and require manoeuvring over sand and stones, silty mud or under low hanging bows of pōhutukawa. Other parts are approached over a series of formed paths and built-up wooden boardwalks.

I have been fortunate, through this extended lockdown, to have time to observe the walkway in more detail and am captivated by this natural world at our doorstep.

Andrew Slater, chief executive of Whakarongorau Aotearoa, which runs Healthline, said the advice given is in line with the latest guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Immunisation Advisory Centre, and is supported by a clinical governance group.

Slater urged people not to sit on questions stopping them from getting vaccinated, adding that the service is presented with all kinds of curly questions.

“Ask us anything. We won’t judge. You can be anonymous when you call.”

Join the rest of the motu on October 28 by taking part in our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi, ShakeOut. Signing up only takes 2 minutes and when you do, you’ll be entered to win a personal emergency grab bag or civil defence wheelie bin kit from NZ Civil Defence.
ShakeOut takes place around the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake:

DROP - down on your hands and knees. This protects you from falling but lets you move if you need to.

COVER - your head and neck (or entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk (if it is within a few steps of you). If there is no shelter nearby, cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

HOLD - on to your shelter (or your position to protect your head and neck) until the shaking stops. If the shaking shifts your shelter around, move with it.

Head to www.shakeout.govt.nz... to sign up today and get involved!

Residents at a central Auckland retirement village are growing vegetables and donating them to the Auckland City Mission.

Selwyn Heights Village gardener Pat Tunstall is encouraging residents to take part to help connect people isolated in the Covid-19 lockdown.

National Gardening Week’s “grow to give” competition officially begins on Labour Weekend and competitors will photograph their failures and successes.

“We’ve got people growing their extra row in the garden, balcony pots and troughs. As long as there’s a bit of dirt, there’s a potential crop of veggies,” Tunstall said.

“Already voices can be heard on balconies starting the journey of caring for their seeds in the most suitable pot or trough sought from those recycled in our nursery. It’s got people sharing a common goal, communicating and having a laugh.”

The competition ends in February and surplus fresh vegetables will be given to the City Mission.

Participants will grow an extra row of vegetables and donate the yields to a local food distribution organisation.

Register online at the link below between October 1 and 25 to receive a free pack of veggie seeds.
