Repayment for Covid 19 Support
Hi team
I have a friend who is facing a difficult situation with the IRD. He's 50 years old and was a house painter, but work has been slow, so he closed his GST account and took a regular job.
He's now being asked to repay around $16,000 (with interest) in COVID-19 support payments from 2021. The IRD claims he didn't meet the criteria for the support, but he's unsure why. They've looked at his bank statements from 2021-2022 and say he made cash withdrawals and payments to third parties during the lockdown.
My friend is confused and worried. He's never had any issues with the IRD before. Has anyone else experienced something similar or have any advice? Any help would be greatly appreciated
