Auckland music, Saturday from midday on East FM

Phil from Farm Cove

The dynamic home-grown Waiheke Jazz Festival, and a tribute to The Alibis, feature on tomorrow’s She’ll Be Right on Saturdays Show with PJ Taylor, midday to 4pm (NZ time, Feb 17) on East FM.

We’ll be talking with Waiheke Jazz Festival managing director John Quigley at 1pm about the brilliant line-up for the Easter Weekend spectacular on Hauraki’s paradise island.

A few weeks ago, we paid tribute to Auckland and NZ music legend Wayne Baird of The Alibis, and many exceptionally awesome Auckland rhythm n’ blues bands down the decades, and we promised a spotlight on The Alibis.

Annette Hart, long-time saxophonist with The Alibis, is joining us in the studio at 2.30pm to play the band’s tracks, remember Wayne Baird and Phil Oxenham, their bassist, who has also passed in the past year, and to hear her music story.

Waiheke Jazz Festival has six fab events during Easter Weekend, March 29- April 1.

John Quigley says: “Every Easter, Waiheke comes alive with jazz. Come for the day, or make a ‘Waihekend of it! We try to programme a range of music to suit most taste, with the focus firmly on jazz.”

Fri, Mar 28: Midday to 5pm, Good Riday Groove is an outdoor show, five bands over five hours on the shores of Matiatia Bay at Ahipao. Acts include Greg Johnson, Whitechapel Jak, Big Tasty, Waiheke’s own Devon Welch, and Wellington’s incredible Crash Bandihoot.

Fri, Mar 29: 7.30-10pm, Jackie Bristow in Concert – Jackie is a well-known Kiwi performer living and touring in North America. The fantastic Turkey the Bird, of Taranaki, open the show, at Artworks Theatre, in Oneroa.

Sat, Mar 30: The Jazz Matinee, features the incredible groups Thabani Gapara, Miho’s Jazz Orchestra, and Crash Bandihoot, at Artworks Theatre, 1-4pm.

Sat, Mar 30: The Festival Club has Waiheke’s own array of stars under the monika the Sun Vaut Set – a night to be remembered! Bring your dancing shoes!

Sun, Mar 31: Jazz Sundowner features five sensational groups, including Eve Kelly performing her hits such as Mr Big Shot; Boom Boom! De Luxe, Waiheke’s Sirens, Turkey the Bird, and Australia’s George Washingmachine with Clare O’Meara, at Ahipao, 4-8pm.

Mon, Apr 1: Jazz Long Lunch has NZ’s favourite jazz entertainers The Nairobi Trio, Brazilian group Soul Bossa Duo, and George Washingmachine with Clare O’Meara.

Living the good life in retirement, a Stuff-Metlifecare partnership

Metlifecare

Kia ora team

Our special partnership with Metlifecare continues, and we have some great content to share with readers about people living their best lives in retirement.

This issue we look at some of the worthwhile volunteer roles retirees are filling in our communities, learn about mindfulness at any age, and check out some Kiwi beach travel options while the good weather lasts.

Don’t forget to try out our nostalgia quiz - it’s for anyone who wants to test the Kiwi knowledge they’ve picked up over the past four, five, six or more decades.
