Covid-19

Alan from Flat Bush

Ok, Covid-19 has finally gotten real in NZ and we're about to experience what other countries have already.

One thing we will desperately need is helping hands, particularly drivers, who are able to shop for the vulnerable, or pick up and carry medication.

If you, or anyone you know, has been laid off and is looking for work, please get them to get in contact with me through Neighbourly. I will be keeping it open to ensure we get as many people as possible involved. This is a national problem, so it doesn't matter whether you're in Temuka or Takapuna.

The need will be huge and I've been working on setting up teams all this week, in anticipation of where we are now. I'm dealing with the Ministry of Health as well as supermarket chains.

Please share this with everyone you can, so we can find everyone who is capable of helping. We want to talk to people who are being sensible enough to be taking extreme precautions themselves. We want to protect, not infect.

They will be paid for their work - this is not voluntary and the intention is to provide an essential service as well as enabling people with no income to earn a few dollars and provide for their own families.

So let's all join in to beat this little sucker a billion times smaller than us.

What workplace change would you like to see most?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

This coming Monday is Labour Day in New Zealand. This public holiday marks when the eight-hour workday and 48-hour workweek became law in 1899. The idea started with Samuel Parnell, a carpenter in Wellington, who in 1840 refused to work more than eight hours a day. Since skilled workers were in short supply, his employer had to agree.

As more skilled workers arrived, employers tried to change working conditions, but Parnell and others kept pushing for better rights. In 1890, Parnell led a Labour Day parade of 1,500 people to promote the eight-hour day. He passed away shortly after, and nine years later, Labour Day became an official public holiday.

Do you feel that we have reached the ideal in working environments yet? What rights are you passionate about relating to employment? Share your thoughts!
