Mount Wellington first-grader creates Covid-19 storybook
A five-year-old girl has created a storybook about the Covid-19 pandemic and how it has affected her.
Hazel, who is a student at Stanhope Road School in Auckland’s Mount Wellington, tells the story in her own words accompanied by her own illustrations.
Hazel's parents printed the book into hardback copies, and this week she received a letter from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern congratulating her on the book.
Stanhope Road School learning support coordinator Deb Bartlett said the story is about being resilient and finding the positives.
“Many people wouldn't have access to a five-year-old's perspective on the pandemic,” she said.
A draft of the story with Hazel narrating is available on YouTube.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
