Mental health nurses relocated out of Manukau police district custody unit
Mental health nurses have been based at the Counties Manukau police district custody unit since 2008 as part of the watch-house nurse pilot initiative.
However in December 2018, the two full-time nurses were moved to the core Intake and Acute Assessment team based off-site at Counties Manukau Health. The Counties Manukau DHB said the move was due to staffing pressures and fewer presentations of acute mental health situations requiring a nurse. But a leading barrister is warning the removal of mental health nurses increases the likelihood of another tragedy occurring, following the death of Sentry Taitoko in the cells in 2014.
Do you think the nurses should be put back in the cells? Let us know in the comments.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?
The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.
This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
