Young kokako chicks weigh in

Caryn Wilkinson Reporter from Community News

Auckland Zoo bird keepers Casey and Erin have helped Ark in the Park to band and weigh tiny 15-day old kokako chicks.

Ark in the Park is an open sanctuary and conservation project in the Waitākere Ranges near Auckland.

Zoo staff joined volunteers to take an annual census in the west Auckland nature reserve, recording all banded and un-banded birds.

About 1600 pairs of kokako remain in the north island.

The census is held to note their presence in the forest and determine if their populations are growing.

The bands are used to identify each individual bird which bears its own unique colour combination.

Data gleaned from the survey is used to scout out nests.

The chicks are moved from the nest for weighing and banding before being returned swiftly to their mother.

🐾 Adopt Shasha🐾

Pinal from Remuera

Hello neighbours

Meet Shasha, our beloved 11-year-old family dog! Currently living with my in-laws, Shasha is a perfectly healthy and good-spirited pup who brings joy to everyone she meets.

Shasha loves short walks and playing outdoors, but she also enjoys her downtime, often resting peacefully while keeping you company. She thrives on companionship and doesn’t like being alone, making her an ideal addition to a family that can offer her the love and attention she craves.

Due to my in-laws’ upcoming travels, they’ve made the difficult decision to find Shasha a new home where she will feel secure and cherished.

All of her vaccine records will be provided, ensuring you have everything you need to take care of her.

We’re not asking for any money—just a caring family that will give Shasha the affectionate home she deserves.
If you’re ready to welcome this sweet girl into your life and provide her with the love she needs, please reach out. Let’s make Shasha a part of your family! 🐶❤️
