Goff said he aimed to keep rates low in his first term against all the challenges and pressures on the cash-strapped council, but his long-term budget set rates increases of 3.5 per cent in his second term, which he would stick to. "I think it's the responsible thing to do to keep rates at a level where some Aucklanders who are under pressure can still afford to pay for their rates but to still deliver the things that our city desperately needs. "I guess we all want to go to heaven but none of us want to die. We want the services, but we would prefer not to pay any more rates," Goff said. The mayor came under fire from some quarters over the replacing of a targeted rate for transport with targeted rates for the environment and improving water quality. Goff said the environment was among his biggest achievements in his first term, saying Aucklanders had got behind the targeted rates to clean up beaches in 10 years, not the 30 years set down, dealing to predators and planting one million trees. He also introduced a regional fuel tax of 11.5c a litre in July last year and a "bed tax" on hotels, motels and online rentals such as Airbnb and Bookabach. The mayor said he would keep looking at new ways to raise revenue and said the 10-year budget had efficiency savings targets of $1 billion to spend on things Aucklanders wanted. Goff is placing trust at the centre of his campaigns as he squares off against former Labour MP John Tamihere, who will have councillor and former National MP Christine Fletcher as his running mate. "I will stand on my merits, my integrity, my skill, experience and trustworthiness. Other candidates will have to do the same. "Every candidate that puts themselves forward for election will need to face scrutiny and prove to the public they are able to be trusted to run the affairs of the city," said Goff, without naming Tamihere, who threatens to take votes off him in south and west Auckland.

This month is all about bringing your community together and having a great time! We want March to be all about celebrating the connections we have while making new ones along the way. As we all know, what makes a neighbourhood great isn't the houses and cars, gardens and streets - it's the people who share their presence and aroha with each other.
A wonderful way to take part is to participate in Neighbours Day Aotearoa which is celebrating it's 10th anniversary from March 22nd to 31st. To help you get started, we love their suggestions for 10 little and 10 big ways to get involved. (link below)

The airline is offering a range of cheap fares from March 1-8 to destinations around the country. This promotion comes in the same week that Air New Zealand announced its biggest pricing shake-up in a decade. Earlier this week, the national carrier confirmed that it would offer 750,000 seats a year for less than $50 each. Jetstar's response today set the stage for an all-out price war between the two airlines - with customers the big winners. "We've been the low fares leader for domestic fares in New Zealand for nearly a decade," Jetstar chief customer officer Catriona Larritt said. "Last year we sold nearly 600,000 domestic fares for under $50." Flights included in the latest Jetstar promotion include $25 fares between Christchurch and Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, and Wellington and Nelson. "Whether it's visiting family and friends or exploring somewhere new in New Zealand, this is a chance for Kiwis to grab a really small fare in a really big sale," Larritt said. This move also comes off the back of Jetstar reiterating its pledge to beat any fares by a competing airline on a similar flight by 10 per cent - meaning that astute deal hunters could get an even better deal than the prices promoted by the likes of Air New Zealand or third-party flight search sites. In addition to the shake-up of regional flight pricing, Kiwi travellers also got some good news on the international front this week, with the announcement that Air Canada would be operating a seasonal direct route between Auckland and Canada. The flights on Air Canada will operate out of Auckland on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. A special introductory deal sees the fares selling as low as CDN$1387 (NZ$1541) for a round-trip.

Sam is my 11-year old ginger tom cat. He has been with us since he was a kitten back in Hawke's Bay. He's moved with us 5 times and he has always settled in well. He is used to a quiet environment; it's just me and him most of the time. He is happiest when he's cared for gently, and once he trusts you, he is loving and affectionate.
I am looking for a home where Sam is going to be loved as much as we love him. My heart is sore that I have to leave him behind but I have to go to Europe semi-permanently for family reasons.
I am moving out on 10 March.
