Bluegrass and a murder-mystery, East FM, Saturday from 3pm
Progressive bluegrass music super-group You, Me, Everybody, and Howick Little Theatre’s new season of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple whodunit – A Murder is Announced – feature on tomorrow’s She’ll Be Right on Saturdays Show with PJ Taylor, 3pm to 7pm (NZ time, July 1) on East FM.
We’ll be talking live at 4pm to NZ folk-bluegrass legend Kim Bonnington about You, Me, Everybody – their journey, music and upcoming tour.
And at 5pm, Matthew Cousins, director of A Murder is Announced, is in-studio to chat about the HLT’s surprisingly first production of a Miss Maple murder-mystery in its more than 50-year history.
You, Me, Everybody are touring this month, with Looking For Alaska, at: Globe Theatre, Palmerston North (July 8), San Fran, Wellington (9th), Jam Factory, Tauranga (22nd), and Tuning Fork, Auckland (23rd). Tickets at www.yme.nz...
Known as NZ’s first bluegrass super-group, their first live gig was a big date, opening for The Felice Brothers (sons of Woodstock) at the Americana Fest at Tuning Fork a few years back.
In February 2020, You, Me, Everybody released their self-titled debut EP, peaking at 13 in the Kiwi album charts, leading to a finalist spot for Best NZ Folk Artist, 2021, in the Aotearoa Music Awards.
They’ve been one of four international bluegrass bands featured in the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Leadership Bluegrass Forum, showcasing after a presentation by Grammy award-winning, Sarah Jarosz.
The first full length album, Southern Sky, by You, Me, Everybody, out in January 2021, also debuted in the top 20 of the album charts.
Now, they feature in Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, opening episode four playing their song Stranger.
An expert observer, Albi, of Albi and the Wolves, says: "Progressive bluegrass isn’t typically an accessible genre for people unfamiliar to acoustic music, but this record is.
“It’s comfortable, relatable and full of musical charisma. The combination of musicians here, headed by the formidable force of Sam and Laurence Frangos-Rhodes is fantastic and fits together beautifully.
“You, Me, Everybody's sometimes rollicking album will transport you to New Zealand’s hills through an Americana lens and it’s delightful! Be sure to see them on tour too, as their live show stacks up just as well.”
A Murder is Announced runs at Howick Little Theatre from July 8-29.
Matthew Cousins says: “This is a light-hearted whodunit with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
“Come along to the first week and if you consider yourself a bit of a detective, spot the props that appear in the teaser trailer and on stage live, and enter to win a prize.”
