The Manukau East Shopping Shuttle, organised by the Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS), provides a door-to-door service to Botany Town Centre and Pakuranga Plaza for people who find it difficult to access their shopping requirements.

$10 includes the return trip and a cup of coffee or tea.

The service relies on a number of loyal volunteers who drive the shuttle, act as companions when necessary and assist people with their shopping

We always welcome new shoppers who might like to take advantage of the service as well as volunteers to help out.

MECOSS started the service in 2007 after identifying a need to help people who depended on family or friends or had to pay to get their shopping done.

Many of these people were isolated in their homes with few and limited choices for socialising. That was when MECOSS felt they could organise a weekly shopping trip.

The service was born after finding a van for use and when Botany Town Centre and Pakuranga Plaza came on board to offer free hot drinks and a good shopping venue for people with limited mobility.

With a host of cafes involved and a queue of keen shoppers every week the Manukau East Shopping Shuttle Shopping keeps going from strength to strength.

For more information and to book a shopping trip please contact Maureen on 0800 632 677

Kia ora Auckland,

Should the proposed marina on Waiheke Island get the green light?

Construction on Waiheke Island's Kennedy Point marina is to continue after an out of court settlement was made between campaigners and developers.

Four years of court proceedings have been withdrawn by Save Kennedy Point (SKP), after Kennedy Point Boatharbour Limited said they would put the welfare of a little blue penguin colony front of mind.

As part of the settlement, the developers have agreed to forgo all recent costs orders made against SKP and to not seek further costs from them.

SKP was facing bills of almost $250,000 sought by the developers and Auckland Council.

In more recent developments, the group has announced they will hīkoi to Parliament to deliver a petition asking Environment Minister David Parker take the case back to the Environment Court.

The petition, which already has 8500 signatures, was started by Uri o Ngāri Pāoa, who are occupying the beach at Kennedy Point.

Kia ora koutou. A new bridge costing $685 million is to be built for walkers and cyclists crossing Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour.

It is hoped construction can begin mid-2022, in a plan unveiled just five days after cycling lobbyists broke through a police barrier and rode over the existing Harbour Bridge, demanding action.

Transport Minister Michael Wood said once begun, the new structure is expected to take five years to complete, and work will continue on interim use of existing harbour bridge lanes for cycling and walking.

“A stand-alone structure is the safest option that will not only provide a walking and cycling option for commuters but creates an outstanding piece of tourism infrastructure,” said Wood.
