Pohutukawa Singers concerts Fri Aug 21 and Sun Aug23
Albany based choir, Pohutukawa Singers, is looking forward to giving its first post-lockdown concert this month. There are two performances.
The first is an evening concert at 7.30pm on Friday 21 August at the Albany Presbyterian Church, 539, Albany Highway (opposite Albany Senior High).
The second is an afternoon performance at 4.00pm on Sunday 23 August at St Chad's Church, 7 Matua Road, Huapai/Kumeu
The programme will include a variety of musical genres and song styles, mainly from the 20th century but with a few from much earlier times. In particular this concert will feature a selection of familiar songs by George and Ira Gershwin as well as another from the same era written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein.
We welcome enquiries from anyone interested in coming to either of these performances for a varied programme of song. Post-concert refreshments are included in the ticket price. This coming Monday is Labour Day in New Zealand. This public holiday marks when the eight-hour workday and 48-hour workweek became law in 1899. The idea started with Samuel Parnell, a carpenter in Wellington, who in 1840 refused to work more than eight hours a day. Since skilled workers were in short supply, his employer had to agree.
As more skilled workers arrived, employers tried to change working conditions, but Parnell and others kept pushing for better rights. In 1890, Parnell led a Labour Day parade of 1,500 people to promote the eight-hour day. He passed away shortly after, and nine years later, Labour Day became an official public holiday.
