Lost Cat Jakey

Deirdre from Blockhouse Bay

My family and I believe our 6 year old tabby cat was hit and killed by a car on Tuesday 6th August, between 12-12.30pm. On Wednesday evening we advertised Jakey as missing on BHB Facebook because his absence was unusual for he had been trained with his two siblings to come in for the nights after their mother was run over 4 years earlier. (She was binned by a neighbour across the road without checking if she belonged to anyone.) So at 10pm our first witness on FB confirmed they saw a dead cat of Jakey's description on our street but that the body was gone by Wednesday morning. Two other witnesses said his head bore the brunt. Admittedly, Jakey wouldn't have looked nearly as pretty as normal after that. The driver did not stop, because Jakey was seen on the road at 12.35 when another driver had to swerve to miss him. We understand the driver probably felt bad and frightened. At 1pm Jakey was lying on the grass verge because someone put him there. This happened near 48 Connell Street where there were, and still are, cones surrounding water pipe repairs, not far from the corner as one drives from Kinross Street. We were denied being able to pick Jakey up ourselves for closure. I have exhausted all avenues to check if his body was picked up from the grass verge by Animal Control, Waste Management that day, he is on Lost and Found Pets, and no vet has phoned to say his microchip leads to us. Can anyone remember the company name on the vehicles working there at the time? It isn't Water Piping or Pipes, as I checked already. If you have any knowledge of where he was taken to through hearing what your family members, friends or neighbours may say in conversations, please contact me on 027 503 8567 or (09)6262064 as my family and I are looking for closure. His siblings are still looking out for him too. Thank you so much if you can help.

What it feels like speaking with a MAGA American:

Markus from Green Bay

Me: “Your total is $44.19. Cash or card?”
The customer hands me a credit card but the chip inside it has been hole-punched out.
Me: “Uh, I don’t think this will work.”
Customer: “Why not? It hasn’t expired and I have money in my account.”
Me: “Sir… the chip is gone.”
Customer: “I didn’t want the chip.”
Me: “The card won’t work without it.”
Customer: “It just means I can’t enter my PIN, but you can still swipe it.”
Me: “I don’t think it will work, sir.”
Customer: “Just swipe it.”
I swipe it to prove a point.
Me: “It’s not working, sir.”
Customer: “Then you’re doing it wrong. Swipe it again!”
I do so again with the same result.
Customer: “Maybe you should swipe it so that the magnetic strip isn’t the thing being swiped?”
Me: *Swiping it as suggested.* “Sure, why not? About as much chance of it going through without the magnetic strip as there is without the chip – oh look, it didn’t work.”
Customer: “Your machine must be broken!”
