Duck Crossings

John Gillon from John Gillon - Kaipatiki Local Board

A number of people have asked for a "duck crossing" sign on Kaipatiki Road due to the number of injured ducklings, and the danger when vehicles stop suddenly and people leap out of cars to rescue ducklings. Unfortunately, even though Auckland Transport are keen to slow down traffic across the city to improve safety, they are unwilling to install a duck crossing sign to help slow down the traffic:
"Auckland Transport must consider the proliferation of traffic signage in the road corridor as it can be a distraction for drivers. Signage of this nature typically has little effect on driver behaviour and does not necessarily reduce the risk to ducks, therefore we only install duck crossing signs where it has been identified that there is a risk of endangered native species being hit by traffic. While we understand the reason for your request, until such time as evidence as above is provided, we are unable to justify installing duck crossing signage at this location."

What workplace change would you like to see most?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

This coming Monday is Labour Day in New Zealand. This public holiday marks when the eight-hour workday and 48-hour workweek became law in 1899. The idea started with Samuel Parnell, a carpenter in Wellington, who in 1840 refused to work more than eight hours a day. Since skilled workers were in short supply, his employer had to agree.

As more skilled workers arrived, employers tried to change working conditions, but Parnell and others kept pushing for better rights. In 1890, Parnell led a Labour Day parade of 1,500 people to promote the eight-hour day. He passed away shortly after, and nine years later, Labour Day became an official public holiday.

Do you feel that we have reached the ideal in working environments yet? What rights are you passionate about relating to employment? Share your thoughts!
