The city’s heterogeneous nature is the crux of the Auckland War Memorial Museum’s latest exhibition, Tāmaki Herenga Waka: Stories of Auckland.

It tells the diverse narratives of the people and places that call the city home, with a particular focus on early immigrant families who had – and continue to have – a fundamental impact on its formation.

The Kronfeld family, who moved to Auckland in the 1890s, have had a particularly trailblazing existence.

In as little as 10 years after moving, Prussian Jew Gustav Kronfeld boasted a hugely successful import-export business and had become a naturalised member of the British Empire.

Along with his Samoan wife Louisa he also helped care for those who passed through Auckland from the Pacific Islands, in a grand house he had built himself.

Emily Parr, the Kronfeld’s great-great-granddaughter said her ancestors' warm and familial hospitality helped countless travellers and established Pacific Island roots in Auckland, at a time when very few Samoans were in New Zealand.

We have a huge development of multi storey blocks going in on Croydon Road, New Lynn where there used to be 2 houses; plus yet another house being replaced by 8 units in my neighbourhood with a lot more intensification to come. Developer contributions go nowhere near paying for all the new infrastructure needed. Ratepayers are forced to pay for the rest while developers and investors make huge profits. Auckland Council is broke, in huge debt and taking on a lot more. This totally unsustainable, suburb destroying intensification with its huge loss of urban tree cover needs to become an election issue.

Hi Neighbours,

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced Auckland will join the rest of New Zealand at Covid-19 alert level 1 from midday Friday.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Update from Auckand Reporters at Stuff:

Auckland is moving to alert level 1 at midday.

* The Blues can host Highlanders with Eden Park crowd, and fans can attend America's Cup.

* Cabinet made the decision on Thursday, but delayed the announcement.

* The delayed decision is a 'logistical nightmare', Auckland restaurant owner says
* There were no new community cases to report yesterday.

* On Wednesday, the Government unveiled a detailed timeline for when people will get the Covid-19 vaccine.

Due to the shift down, Sunday's Super Rugby Aotearoa game between the Blues and Highlanders can go ahead with a crowd.

Crowds can also attend racing at the America’s Cup and Team New Zealand's defence of the cup continues against Luna Rossa from Friday afternoon.
