Did the wild weather affect your property over the weekend, or the property of someone you know? 🌧
Here's our advice for returning to your property after a leak or flood:

πŸ’§ Water and electricity are a bad combination so please be very careful.

πŸ’§ If you evacuated, have your home checked by electrician before returning

πŸ’§ Do not use any household appliances or tools if they have been in floodwater, even if they seem to be dry now. Get them checked by an electrician before you use them.

πŸ’§ Do not plug heaters or dehumidifiers into multiboards. These appliances use a large amount of power and overloading multiboards can cause a fire.

πŸ’§ If you have any chemicals or hazardous substances affected by floodwater, contact your local council about how to dispose of these safely.

β€’ OPEN FIRE SEASON for the High Country Zone Ashburton Coastal, Timaru Coastal and Waimate Coastal zones

This now means the whole area of the Mid-South Canterbury district from the Rakaia River to the Waitaki River, sea to the Alps is in an open fire season.

No permits are required for burning, however there is still an expectation that all outdoor burning is conducted in a safe manner.

RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON (PERMIT REQUIRED) for:
β€’ Geraldine and Waimate Forest zones
A permit is required to light a fire in open air in these areas.

See www.checkitsalright.nz... to apply for a permit online or call 0800 658 628. You can also check for types of fire which have been authorised as not being fires in open air and do not need a permit.

You commit an offence if you knowingly or recklessly light, or allow another person to light, a fire in open air in an area that is in a Restricted Fire Season unless under a permit.

May 10th to 16th is NZ Sign Language Week. One of our Fire Risk Management Officers, Nick Linton, has put together some videos about fire safety in NZ Sign Language. Have a watch at the link below.

Did you know that NZ Sign Language (NZSL) is one of the official languages of Aotearoa New Zealand? Around 20,000 people use NZSL to communicate, so why not try a bit for yourself this week.

Also, if you know anyone who is Deaf or hard of hearing, there are special smoke alarms that use strobe lights and/or shakers to alert of a fire, and in many cases these are fully funded. For more information, contact the Timaru Fire Station on 03 684 1200.
