Federation (now Chamber Music New Zealand), embraced the vision of
having a resident first-class professional string quartet who would prioritise music by our own composers and who could take on projects of the kind that would be impracticable for visiting quartets. The NZSQ have more than fulfilled that vision and – thirty years on – are an established and vital part of the musical infrastructure in Aotearoa.
Comprised of Helene Pohl (violin I), Monique Lapins (violin II), Gillian Ansell (viola) and Rolf Gjelsten (cello), the quartet have, through hard work, dedication to fine music and ceaseless travelling become favourites of New Zealand concertgoers.
Over the decades the Quartet has cultivated a rich repertoire, including a wide variety of New Zealand music, composers’ cycles from Beethoven to Bartok, Mozart to Berg, The Quartet have proudly championed New Zealand music since their inception, commissioning over 150 New Zealand works.
All members of the Quartet teach at the New Zealand School of Music – Te Kokī where the NZSQ has been Quartet-in-Residence since 1991, as well as running the Adam Chamber Music School in Nelson and the NZSM Queen’s Birthday Chamber Music Weekend in Wellington for up-and-coming musicians.
The Mulled Wine Concerts organisation headed up by Mary Gow will showcase the NZ String Quartet at on 13 August at St. Peter's Village Hall in Paekakariki. This concert offers Kapiti audiences a chance to experience the quartet as they work their classical magic on a selection from their 2023 repertoire, including pieces by Schubert, Smetana and Ross Harris.
“The concerts will undoubtedly be popular” says Gow. “We are pleased and honoured to be able to present such a high-level and well-known group of musicians as part of our 2023 Kapiti concert series”.

Mulled Wine Concerts Presents BENJAMIN CARTER
A genuine Kiwi home-grown talent, Ben Carter hails from Lower Hutt and
comes from a very musical family – both his parents play in the New Zealand
Symphony Orchestra! Perhaps inevitably, Ben has grown up with music and
has developed his own special talent, which will be on display at the Memorial
Hall in Paekakariki on Sunday 23 July when he will put on a concert for Mary
Gow's Mulled Wine Concerts organisation. Kapiti audiences will get a chance
to see a stunning young musician at the very start of what promises to be a
stellar career.
To make the concert even more exciting, audiences will hear
concert-level performances on two instruments - piano and cello - as Ben
presents masterpieces by Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Prokofiev and Scriabin.
Ben has played piano, cello and his surprise instrument, the ukelele from a
young age. He is a first-year student at Victoria University School of Music
where he is concentrating on studying piano under the guidance of Professor
Jian Liu.
He has been successful in competitions at the regional and national
level – last year he won the National Performing Arts Award, playing the cello.
He will shortly be off to Zhuhai, China as the New Zealand entry for the 50th
International Mozart Competition for young musicians.
Although young, Ben does not lack performing experience – he has appeared
as a soloist with the NZSO at their 75th anniversay celebrations, and also with
musicians from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He was Principal Cellist
of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra in 2021 and Principal Cellist of the NZ
Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra 2001-2002. He recently presented
a Mozart Piano Concerto as a soloist with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.
A versatile young musician such as Benjamin Carter does not come along
very often and Mulled Wine Concerts is proud to present a performance that
will be sure to be well attended and talked about for a very long time.

He has already won a number of major international piano competitions and has an extraordinary repertoire, ranging from Bach to the latest contemporary composers. As well as performing on the concert circuit in Europe and Asia, he is a noted academic occupying a senior position in one of the largest music schools in Asia, in Taiwan.
Mulled Wine Concerts, will present a piano recital by Nikolai Saratovsky
at 2:30PM on SUNDAY 25 June 2023 at the Memorial Hall in Paekakariki and in Anzac Hall in Featherston on FRIDAY JUNE 23 at7.30pm.
Organiser Mary Gow, a concert pianist herself, tells the story of how she met Saratovsky at his recital in Brussels and mentioned that she came from New Zealand. "His eyes lit up and told me that he and his Japanese-born wife had always dreamed of visiting New Zealand! From there, it was a short step to discussing possibilities - I arranged a concert tour for him in 2018 and he had such a good reception, he wanted to return – this he did in 2019 and NZ audiences raved". And then, of course came Covid, the shut-down of international travel and the cancellation of concerts everywhere. So it is only now in 2023 that we will have the opportunity of hearing him once more.
Saratovsky studied at the Moscow State Conservatory graduating with the Award for Academic Excellence and a Master's degree, and has gone on to win numerous awards for his musical accomplishments. He regularly gives master classes in Japan, Russia,The USA, Canada, Luxembourg and Taiwan. Since his last visit to New Zealand he has done concert tours in England, Korea, Japan and Africa.
Mary Gow feels that his visit to New Zealand represents a wonderful opportunity for Kapiti and Wairarapa audiences to catch a star during his brief visit to New Zealand. "The Mulled Wine Concert Series always tries to bring audiences the sort of artists that discerning audiences will appreciate and we are very lucky that this year he has again managed to fit us into his schedule. To see a pianist of this quality and fire is an opportunity not to be missed".
Nikolai Saratovsky will present a recital of works including Schubert Impromptus, “Spanish Rhapsody” by Liszt, and works by Scarlatti, Chopin, Tchaikowsky and Shostakovich and others.

They will present a “Salon Concert” intended to give Kapiti audiences a taste of what famous Kiwi soprano Rosina Buckman's tour would have sounded like a century ago.
New Zealand has a long history of classical music and this year, one hundred years will have passed since the singer – who in her day attracted audiences of ten thousand or more to concert halls around Europe – undertook an epic tour of the entire country to celebrate her return to the Southern Hemisphere. Rosina and her accompanists, Cellist Adelina Leon and pianist-composer Percy Kahn played 110 concerts in 1922 to enthusiastic audiences around Australia and New Zealand, most of which were sold out.
The 2022 programme is called “Homecoming” and will offer high-level music interspersed with funny and enchanting anecdotes from the 1922 Buckman tour comparing life on the road then and now – including some vignettes of Kapiti life then. "We're looking to create a special atmosphere," says pianist Mews. "We will play a piece and chat to the audience as if we were playing in their sitting-room at home. People will be able to hear the music much as it would have been heard by audiences when it was performed a hundred years ago".
On the musical side, the group will present some of the period music from the original tour, notably Arditi's “Il Bacio” and a piece composed by Molly Carew for soprano and piano “Love's a Merchant”. There will be an arrangement by Percy Kahn of “Ave Maria”, and other pieces for cello, piano and vocals. The group will also present some of their own favourites including Brahms' “Intermezzo in B flat” and Offenbach's “L'Etoile” scored for soprano, cello and piano.
A delightful and historic afternoon of music and history is in prospect and organiser Mary Gow is delighted to have this unusual and intriguing performance as part of her 2022 Mulled Wine concert series. The concert will take place in Paekakariki's beautiful Memorial Hall on the sea front with its unrivalled views of Kapiti Island and special acoustic qualities.

Music aficionados everywhere appreciate and love the complexities of top-flight chamber music. This is music written for and played by small groups of musicians, each instrument having its own part to play within the whole, the result being the beautiful sound we hear. In earlier times “chamber” music was just that – music played in people's homes for their own enjoyment. Nowadays, chamber music is heard in concert halls and on recordings too, but it still works best when the musicians are close together and close to their audience to appreciate the live sound.
Ghost Trio is a group of such musicians – Monique Lapins (violin), Ken Ichinose (cello) and Gabriela Glapska (piano) and they will be appearing soon at the Paekakariki Memorial Hall as part of the 2022 Mulled Wine Concert series. Organiser Mary Gow is delighted to have such a fine group playing on the Kapiti Coast. “They are a fairly new group” she says “formed in 2019, they have been getting rave reviews wherever they go”. The group has recently toured nationwide for Chamber Music New Zealand and were commended for their elan and unfailing attention to musical detail.
The trio is international in outlook – Monique is the second violinist of the NZ String Quartet and lectures at the New Zealand School of Music, Ken is a graduate of the UK's Royal Academy of Music and Gabriela is from Poland, where she received her first degree, later studying for her Ph.D degree in music at the NZSM. She is the rehearsal pianist for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. The group will present an interesting mix of music at its concert on Sunday 19 June. The great masters will be presented: Beethoven and Brahms will be featured, of course, but along with these will be more modern composers – Eve de Castro-Robinson's “At Water's Birth” and the Piano Trio of Fauré.
“A feast of sound for the discerning listener” is how the organiser describes the concert. The venue will be the lovely sea-front Paekakariki Memorial Hall which offers stunning views of Kapiti Island to match the wonderful sounds within. AND FREE MULLED WINE.
