The Island Bay Festival is one of Wellingtons longest running festivals. Showcasing the talent and diversity of the South Coast, this annual summer festival is held every February. Each year the festival opens with the Parade and Variety Show, usually on the 2nd Saturday of February. Crowds of locals line the streets to watch the Festival Parade and follow it down to Shorland Park where they are entertained by local musicians, dance, community and school groups performing on the Band Rotunda stage. The Day in the Bay is a major event in the Summer City calendar, sponsored by Wellington City Council. This is not only a great Festival day with entertainment, funfairs and markets – it’s also shows thousands of visitors the unique character of Island Bay’s heritage including the stunning Blessing of the fishing boats. Honoring Island Bay’s history as a race track, Ribble Street is closed off for racing including a downhill trolley derby and Lego racing. There is a great Street Party atmosphere and it’s a firm family favourite that can be enjoyed by everyone at the Ribble Street Races! The Island Bay Festival is organised by our talented Festival Co-ordinators. The organisation is overseen by the Island Bay Enhancement Trust, a small group of locals from arts and business backgrounds.
