The Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park Vision for the residential red zone is to transform the area into a vibrant, city-to-sea native forest park and wetlands along the Avon-Ōtākaro River. The AOFP believe this land should be returned to nature, creating a ribbon of green from the the town centre to New Brighton with sensitive recreation activities and open play areas as well as community gardens on the fringe. The Forest Park is a low impact and low cost idea that has loads of benefits including biodiversity, clean waters and community engagement as well as revenue opportunities. The idea is complementary to other ideas for the RRZ including the Waitākari wildlife sanctuary and Mahinga Kai.
