My name is Kevin Phillips, also known as Dollar Dad in the WordPress, Drupal, SilverStrip and Codeigniter communities. I have been in the IT Industry since 1995 and building websites for clients since 2007.
I started working for myself because I was disappointed at how some web design companies treated their clients. Poor designs, failed expectations, over budget and more importantly the wrong type of websites.
I truely believe that website development should be tailored to each individual client, every business is different and their expectations need to be addressed.
For example, a small retailer needs a website so potential customers can get information about the shop, like opening hours, contact telephone number, google map, ask a question. This retailer does not need a fully blown online ecommerce shop. So a small branded website for a few hundred dollars will fulfil this need.
I also believe that we should fully understand the needs of the business - do they need a blog or latest news? Nothing is worse than a website with latest news from 2 years ago! Would it be better to link a Facebook page?
Understanding SEO Search Engine Optimisation and what it really means. If you are a plumber in Kapiti Coast then the keywords are Plumber, Kapiti Coast - you are not trying to get people from Auckland, Sydney or London to visit your site, you are displaying your contact information for people in Kapiti Coast. It really annoys me when web design agencies try this SEO and digital marketing up selling ploy for small businesses. All that happens is the client's expectations are not met and they feel disappointed and let down.
