Alpine Fault Tours

We take a 4WD bus up the Waitangitaona River valley to see the natural exposure of the Alpine Fault at Gaunt Creek. From a geological perspective, this is one of the best examples in the world of an exposed intercontinental fault. The tour is informative and visitors learn about the history of the discovery of the fault, plate tectonics, glaciation, erosion & sedimentation. They see two seismic observatories and then walk down a bush track, across Gaunt Creek and up a rocky slope to see and touch the fault itself, and the special minty-green rock called 'cataclasite' which has come up from 35km below. They can stand astride the two continental plates and take a photo. Sturdy footwear is required.
