Northlanders are being warned to stay off beaches and out of the water following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Canterbury.
Those living on the coast were evacuated early Monday morning as a precaution against a predicated tsunami.
Tsunami sirens were activated and Civil Defence Northland posted on Facebook asking Northlanders living on the coast to move inland or to higher ground immediately after the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management reported there was an imminent threat.
People near the beach at Ngunguru evacuated themselves to the hills and it is understood this also occurred at Ruakaka and Tutukaka.
The tsunami siren also sounded at Ruawai on Kaipara's west coast harbour, but a decision was made by the Ruawai Community Response group there was no immediate need to evacuate.

Some are 78's and consist of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, a boxed set of Readers Digest Big Bands, plus lots more and some are 45's which consist of Cubby Checker, Michael Holliday and others. There are also CD's and some tapes.
I also have a record player which doesnt work, but does have speakers.

A 110kmh speed limit is to be introduced on some New Zealand roads.
With 245 deaths on our roads already this year, some are asking if more speed is the right answer.
Will an increased speed limit be a good thing for Kiwis?
