A talented jeweller, Joseph Haffmann (Daniel Auteuil) and his family live a comfortable life in the business district of Paris in 1941.

So he hurriedly enacts a plan to send his family to safety and for his newly appointed assistant, Francois to "buy" his jewellery business. Their understanding is that Joseph and his family will return and reclaim the business and their lives once the war has ended.
