A dedicated space designed for tamariki and their whānau to access healthcare opened in Otangarei on Monday
.
The Te Rito Hauora Tamariki Centre will focus on tamariki up to the age of 13, although whānau with tamariki can also be seen as a family.
Kaiwhakahaere Rauemi / Operations Manager, Janine Kaipo, saw the opportunity to better meet the needs of tamariki by creating a space specifically for them.
“Tamariki need access to a range of specialist health and support services. We want to make it easy for whānau to connect with these services in a child-friendly environment. Te Rito will provide this space for our enrolled whānau.”
There are other advantages as well. Kaipo sees the opportunity for nurses and health practitioners to build on their specialist knowledge of child health through this focused, collaborative approach.
Te Hau Awhiowhio o Otangarei Hauora operate a nurse practitioner model where nurses with advanced training have expanded roles and are authorised to prescribe medicines, order diagnostic tests with the guiding hand of the Hauora GP, Dr Jude Russell.
“The difference it can make to whānau can be as simple as having a waiting room where it’s ok for kids to be kids so we are looking forward to being able to better meet the needs of our whānau and their children in Otangarei.”

International Day of Older Persons is a day to celebrate all older people – to highlight the value of all older people and to promote dignity and respect. The 2018 international theme is “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions“.

This year Age Concern New Zealand want all New Zealanders to sign up as Age Concern Dignity Champions and stand up for the human rights of older Kiwis.

“There is no excuse for elder abuse, says Stephanie Clare, Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive. I am appalled that we are still having to deal with cases each day where older people are taken advantage of.

“Just because someone is older it doesn’t mean they are less valuable, have less purpose or should lose basic human rights, the right to make their own choices and respect from those around them.

“Of the cases we see, 75% of alleged abusers are family members, either adult children or partners of adult children and that needs to stop!

“So come on Kiwis we all have a part to play. You can take a stand against ageism and join me by signing up today!” says Stephanie.

An Age Concern Dignity Champion pledges to:
• Reject stereotypes and focus on the uniqueness of every individual
• Speak up when they hear people speaking negatively about growing old
• Have the courage to question practices they feel are disrespectful to older people
• Not patronise older people
• Be patient, polite and friendly
• Have zero tolerance for abuse or neglect
• Build relationships – they combat isolation and loneliness by getting to know the older people in their lives.

It sounds like upgrades similar to the ones completed a while ago on the northern side of the Brynderwyns. The website includes project newsletters and updates, a detailed map, and FAQs. We can subscribe to an email update newsletter, too (it works - I signed up yesterday and have just received the first one).
