Northland System Manager Jacqui Hori-Hoult said Waka Kotahi will be delivering a large amount of roadworks within the region this season to improve the roads, increase safety and make people’s journeys more enjoyable.
“Resealing starts this month and ramps up in October as the days become longer and warmer. The warmer weather helps the new seal stick to the road surface,” she said.
“The weather conditions are critical as was demonstrated earlier this year when the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown shut down Northland’s resealing programme. Once out of lockdown resealing resumed, but by then the weather had turned colder and compromised the new seal in some locations, leaving the bitumen exposed in areas such as on SH1 at Hikurangi and south of Wellsford.”
Road rehabilitation – where the road is dug up, repaired and re-laid as new – has been completed on SH12 at Selwyn Park in Dargaville and work is under way on SH14 at Paradise Road intersection.
Rehabilitation work is planned to continue in October and November on SH1 to the south of Whangarei around the Otaika Quarry and in Warkworth near the Hudson Road intersection, which will be done at night to minimise disruption to traffic. Also in October and November, there will be new asphalt laid on SH1 to the south of Warkworth.
In November and December there will be new chip seal on SH11 and SH14, and on sections of SH1 between Kawakawa and Warkworth. While this work will be largely done at night, motorists may experience some daytime delays.
Despite the significant roadworks programme, most work will stop before busy holiday travel periods like Labour weekend, Christmas and New Year, to minimise disruption to people’s journeys.

Entries for the Open Ceramics Awards are due in 8 days time!
We are excited to announce that our Judge for 2020 is none other than Greg Barron, esteemed Northland artist. We are happy that Greg agreed to be on board this year, and being local to Whangarei means the event can go ahead despite Covid-19 travel restrictions if we have them at that time.
There are two categories of “Best Open Masters” and “Best Emerging” (first time entering a National Show). Applications go through an initial selection round with photographic images only. Selected participants will be notified by 5 October, with an invitation to deliver the physical works for the competition by 23rd October. Judging will happen on 5th November, with the official announcements and opening 5.30pm Friday 6th November.

The fund makes one-off grants of up to $15,000. The grants are open to any New Zealand council, community organisation, or registered non-profit organisation. Applications for our current funding round close on 9 October.
Our last funding round was a huge success and helped fund a range of different projects across the country, that had focuses like reducing loneliness and social isolation of older people, developing an age-friendly community plan and supporting people with dementia.
With the right planning and support, we can create environments where older people are valued, connected and able to participate in their community.

Now, I'm a bit sceptical: I read a report a few years ago that products with the word 'eco' in the name or a dolphin on the label are often no more environmentally friendly than the products from Persil or Proctor & Gamble. It's often just a marketing ploy.
So I'm looking for some genuine information, which is NOT easy to find.
We had a bit of a problem with our biocycle septic system that was discovered at the last maintenance - now, I actually have a suspicion that this was due to our chlorinating our water tanks with a goodly dose of bleach last summer - the water got a bit pongy and was way too warm - rather than the products we use which have otherwise which have not given trouble for years and years. BUT - if I can get some good information, all the better in my opinion, the septic tank maintenance man thought we should look into that.
