Own Your Online say:
We are seeing a significant increase in reporting of ‘Hi Mum’ scams.
A ‘Hi Mum’ scam is a scam where a random message from an unknown number is sent to you claiming to be from a close relative, usually your son or daughter.
The fake relative often claims their phone is broken – which is why they’re contacting you from a different number – and will ask you to do something, sometimes asking you to help them with a payment or to do something by clicking a link.
If you receive one of these, don’t click the links. Try to contact your relative using their normal number which is probably still working.
You can also report these scam messages by forwarding free to Department of Internal Affairs on 7726
Check out Own Your Online scam checklist here.

MY FAVOURITE CAKE
Iran (subtitles), 2024 Comedy/Drama
97 mins, Rated M
Cast: Lili Farhadpour, Esmaeel Mehrabi.
Mahin is 70 and has been a widow for over 30 years. Added to that, her two children live abroad, so she lives an uneventful life in Tehran, where women's rights are heavily restricted.
But one day, Mahin decides to join her visiting friends for an afternoon tea and a chance encounter with a taxi driver, Faramarz makes her feel alive again.
With the beginnings of a spark in her heart, Mahin invites Faramarz to dinner (despite the prying and judgmental eyes of her neighbours) and their evening is one that brings both of them unpredictable surprises and memories to treasure.

Police received a report of a person injured at Beach Road Reserve at about 11.10am.
Upon arrival, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A second person was located with serious injuries and has been transported to hospital.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer, Whangārei CIB, says Police do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the wider community.
“The key focus for us is determining the series of events that led up to this tragic incident.”
Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, in particular we would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this incident.
Cordons will remain in place and the community can expect to see an increased Police presence in the area while a scene examination is completed and enquires are carried out.
Members of the public are asked to avoid the area until this has been completed and motorists are advised Beach Road remains closed from Church Road.
“We understand this incident would have been unsettling for the wider community and we appreciate the assistance from the public during this time.”
Police will provide a further update when we are in a position to do so.
If you can assist with our investigation, please call Police on 105 or go online to www.police.govt.nz... quoting job number P061751387.
