A talented jeweller, Joseph Haffmann (Daniel Auteuil) and his family live a comfortable life in the business district of Paris in 1941.
But after the Nazi occupation, Joseph watches helplessly as fellow Jews are extracted from the city at gun point. So he hurriedly enacts a plan to send his family to safety and for his newly appointed assistant, Francois to "buy" his jewellery business. Their understanding is that Joseph and his family will return and reclaim the business and their lives once the war has ended. But Joseph is unable to leave and must live, hidden in the store with the help of Francois.
