For Thursday, the 6th April at 6pm we are screening the fascinating NZ doco, When the Cows come Home.

Our 8pm screening will be the French film, Full Time which was one of the hits at the NZ International Film Festival last year.

When the Cows Come Home
NZ, 2022, Documentary, 104 mins,

"Cows live in the moment and they remind me to live in the moment."
- Andrew Johnstone

Opening on the Johnstone family farm in Cambridge, we meet Tilly and Maggie, a pair of cows Andrew Johnstone has befriended and subsequently saved from slaughter.

The herdsman is enthusiastic to expound his views on animal husbandry, bovine communication and the vagaries of life in general, before Andrew walks us back through the events that have shaped his life.

From personal family tragedy, to warring with Catholic school authorities; Andrew's life has had a truly idiosyncratic trajectory. Mental health issues may have seen him retreat to life on the farm, but the film makes clear Andrew's restless inquisitiveness is far from being put out to pasture.

Poll: Should we scrap daylight saving?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

This Sunday we'll be putting our clocks back for the end of daylight saving. Despite the benefits of an extra hour of sun during daylight saving, these clock changes commonly bring disruptions to our households and sleep - some feel that it should be scrapped altogether. What do you think?

Northland’s six-monthly tsunami siren test will take place at the end of daylight saving on Sunday, 2 April.

The network of more than 200 outdoor tsunami sirens in coastal communities, from Te Hapua in the north to Mangawhai in the south and Ruawai in the west, is checked twice a year, coinciding with the start and finish of daylight saving.

Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group spokesperson Graeme MacDonald says "Everyone who spends time on the coast needs to know the natural warning signs of tsunami - a strong earthquake that is hard to stand up in or one that lasts longer than a minute, or out-of-the ordinary sea behaviour, such as sudden rise or fall and/or unusual noise."

What you need to know:
- The tsunami siren test will take place at the end of daylight saving on Sunday, 2 April.
- The sirens sound twice: firstly at 10am for 10 minutes and then again at 10.30am for 30 seconds, and will be monitored for any faults.
- Indoor sirens will be tested at the same time as the outdoor network. Test alerts will also be sent to users of the Red Cross Hazard app, which can be downloaded for free.

Northlanders can check out whether they live, work or play in a tsunami evacuation zone, and plan the quickest route to safety, using the interactive maps at: www.nrc.govt.nz...

For Thursday, the 30th March at 6pm we are screening the French film, Full Time which was one of the hits at the NZIFF last year.

Our 8pm screening will be the brilliant Irish film, The Quiet Girl.

Full Time
France, (English subtitles) 2022
Drama, Rated M, 95 mins
Cast: Laure Calamy, Geneviève Mnich, Anne Suarez.
Director: Éric Gravel

A brilliant performance by Laure Calamy as Julie, whose life is a headlong rush from dawn everyday. There are two pre-teen kids who need mustering before she commutes from the distant suburbs to her job in a Parisian luxury hotel, where rooms must be cleaned and rearranged to perfection with precision timing, no matter what appalling state the guests have left them in.

But the harsh reality is that between childcare and travel costs, Julie is barely making ends meet. Added to that, alimony isn’t forthcoming from the children’s father, despite her desperate demands. So, when the possibility of a job more fitting to her skillset and experience arises, Julie hopes to overcome the impossible and wedge extra time into her day to be able to make it to the interview.

"In a knockout performance, Laure Calamy offers welcome visibility to all the unsung women who struggle daily to hold it all together and maintain their dignity, despite the odds." - NZIFF 2022
