Another scam alert

This one is a warning that supposedly your car rego is about to expire and you had better send them some money straight off.

I dropped them a line about this ..."we are currently experiencing high volumes of email, we may get back to you in 9 days" ... yeah, right, that will be useful.
This morning their whole website appears to be down. So if you need to register your car, you may have to go to the testing station, assuming *they* can get in.

Two of my photos are being used at Whangarei hospital, I am very proud. Story below.

Many of the wards and corridors at all four Northland DHB Hospitals have been blessed with local art pieces over the years, which help create a more welcome atmosphere for our patients and their whanau when they spend time with us.

Most recently, Whangarei Hospital has been gifted works from Whangarei photographer Glen McMillan and Tauranga artist Sky…

Glen's images of Tui and Starling were shot in his backyard from his wheelchair and have captured the birds' unique colours.

When Glen was just ten years old, he fell from his bicycle and spent almost four years in hospital. He now uses a wheelchair as his walking has been affected.

Now 61, Glen has led a successful, happy life and has owned several successful businesses, three boats, and many cars, some of which he has raced over the past 30 years.

After investing in some professional camera gear and a concrete path right around his home, Glen has been photographing the birds that spend time on his large section and in the eight-acre native bush reserve that backs onto his property.

He said he loves learning and being creative and is now selling his work as wall art on his online store - www.homedecorideas.co.nz...

Solar power is coming to Northland

Lodestone Energy is planning to build five solar power farms, two of which will be located in Northland. Both Stuff and RNZ have published articles about this.
The first to go online will be in Kaitaia, with construction beginning later this year and completion in 2022, and provide 62GWh annually. Together with the upgraded and expanded geothermal generation at Ngawha, this will provide more energy than the Far North needs and hopefully bring power prices down in that region, which are among the highest in the country. Any excess energy generated will benefit the rest of Northland, and once another solar farm at Dargaville has been added by the end of 2023, much of Northland will be on 100% renewable and locally produced electricity.
Let's get ready for this and support this development with getting off fossil fuels and switching to electricity over the next two to three years. Need a small car that takes us to town and back, or to commute to work, or drive the kids around? Get a used electric vehicle. Still heating the home with wood fire like in the 1800s? Get a heat pump with its three times higher heating efficiency. Gas stove getting old and needing replacement? Switch to an induction cooktop. Want to become part of the renewable electricity grid? Pop rooftop solar on, and a storage battery in the garage or shed. There are so many ways to electrify and increase our energy efficiency, and Gen Less has all the resources we need to learn about it. Also, there's no need for knee-jerk action or panic - we can do all this when opportunities present themselves, like special offers, subsidies, rental and subscription programs with no capital required, or just a great bargain. This decade will bring a lot of progress and changes in the home energy space. Just let's be open-minded, keep our eyes and ears open, tell each other about it, and take action when we can.

Hi Whangārei,

Would you support the introduction of MMP to local body elections?

A former Labour minister has called on the government to implement MMP as the voting system for local body elections in a bid to 'fix' local government.

Peter Neilson, an economist, is a former Labour MP for Miramar, a Minister of Revenue, Works and Associate Minister of Finance. Neilson explains how MMP could have a positive impact on civic participation after data from Internal Affairs showed a decline in voter turnout.

Around four out of 10 New Zealanders on the electoral role turned out to vote in the last set of local elections. In comparison, around seven or eight out 10 voted in the general election last year.
