Northlanders urged to be prepared as Cyclone Dovi causes damage across Northland

As the wild weather continues, Northpower is urging people to be prepared for lengthy outages as its crews work to identify damage across the network, make lines safe and remedy the repairs. The damage is extensive, with more reports of damage and lines down coming in throughout the day and continued high winds causing further issues. Crews are patrolling lines to understand the extent of the damage. In many areas trees and vegetation will need to be removed before repairs can begin. Extra resources are being brought in to deal with this event.

Network General Manager Josie Boyd says “We ask that people are patient as our team work in very difficult conditions. We are working hard, but it would be prudent for people who are impacted to plan to have no power all of today and possibly into tomorrow. We will update our website with the latest information on individual outages as it comes to hand.” Mrs Boyd says that safety of our crews and the public are top priority, and the focus at the moment is on making sites safe (particularly where lines are down), prioritising repairs to bring power back on to larger areas and critical sites first.

Cyclone Dovi has made its presence felt across our region overnight.
Damage to the network has been caused by high winds and trees down over lines. Around 5,000 customers across the network are without power early this morning.
Our crews are out across the network this morning assessing the damage, and working to restore power when it is safe to do so. We are focussed on restoring power to the larger areas without power, and then will work our way through the damaged network. We expect this could take some time, with high winds expected to continue during the day.

Customers are advised to call us on 0800 104040 if they see anything that looks damaged or unsafe and updates on outages can be found at www.northpower.com....

We thank customers for their patience while our crews work as quickly as they can in the conditions to restore power, and customers affected are reminded to treat all lines and equipment as live at all times.

Northlanders are being encouraged to be prepared for electricity outages as ex tropical cyclone Dovi heads towards New Zealand.
Northpower Network General Manager Josie Boyd says the likelihood of power outages could increase as wet and windy weather persists. “It's important to ensure that you're prepared for storms or other situations that may affect your power supply. People should ensure they have plenty of drinking water and it is worth filling buckets and baths (if you have one) for washing and toilet flushing,” says Mrs. Boyd.
Northpower says people should also keep mobile phones charged and ensure you have a car charger for your devices to ensure you can keep in touch and keep informed.

People should also have a torch handy (they are safer than candles which can be a fire hazard), and have a gas bottle topped up for cooking.

In the case of outages, Northpower will provide regular updates on northpower.com and facebook.com/NorthpowerNZ.

Civil Defence Northland also have good guidelines for being prepared, staying safe and putting together an emergency survival and getaway kit - nrc.govt.nz/civildefence.

My dad

Glen from Central Whangarei

My dad is 92, he just wrote this little poem

I don't know what to do now that I'm 92
I'll have to wait and see when I turn 93

Perhaps I'll do much more when I am 94

And really come alive when I reach 95

And not go up to Heaven just because I'm 97

Life will still be great when I am 98

And everything was just fine when I turn 99

Nothing rhymes with Hundred and so I'll have to say

I'll have a cold Waikato to celebrate the day

Stephen from Central Whangarei

Hi

This sounds very interesting, so I thought I'd share it, as there's often not a lot to do around here. Very reasonable cost too.
