We wish everyone a safe Halloween but we need to remember that not everyone wants to be part of Halloween celebrations.

For some older people Halloween can be a frightening and scary time so here are some helpful tips so everyone can enjoy themselves and come away with fond memories:

- Make it a family affair and go trick or treating with your kids or a group from your neighbourhood.
- Call your neighbours in advance to make sure it’s okay to call in to trick-or-treat
- If you don’t want trick-or-treaters calling print or make a sign for your letterbox or window saying no thanks. (New Zealand Police have had downloadable signs)
- If you are a trick-or-treater, respect the people who have a sign asking for you to stay away
- Keep your lights on and guests outside
- Keep your eye out for your older family members, friends and neighbours this Halloween and make sure we all get to enjoy the celebration.

Remember you can help make this a great celebration for your family and community and a great opportunity to connect with your older neighbours.

If you want to go one step further Age Concern New Zealand would like to encourage all Kiwis to sign up to their Dignity Champion Campaign to show a commitment to breaking down ageism and stereotypes and encouraging dignity and respect for older people.

Become an Age Concern Dignity Champion www.ageconcern.org.nz... this Halloween and involve and celebrate the older people in your lives.

A successful traffic flow trial at the Landing Road bridge roundabout, which will come to an end this Friday, has demonstrated significant benefits for traffic entering the Whakatāne urban area from SH30.

The six-week trial was implemented jointly by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and the Whakatāne District Council to evaluate whether peak travel time congestion issues at The Hub could be addressed by reconfiguring the bridge roundabout to provide right-of-way for eastbound traffic. That work was motivated by NZTA’s planned three-month maintenance closure of the Peketahi Bridge on SH2 from mid-February next year, which will see an extra 2000 vehicles per day routed through Whakatāne, exacerbating the existing traffic congestion issues.

Hi all,

I am seeking koha of tired old items of wooden furniture to up-cycle and sell to raise money for Opotiki SPCA. Only requirement is that they are borer-free, other than that they can be rough as!

I usually volunteer at the SPCA a few days a week but ill health means I can't at the moment so I am thinking of other ways to help.

I hope to do a few pieces for them to sell at Trash & Treasure and hopefully inspire other people to get involved too so that we could make it a regular way for people of any age to socialise productively and be creative while supporting a very worthy cause.

Opotiki SPCA receives no government funding and is almost entirely volunteer run and achieves so much in our community, but they need our support to keep running.

If you would like to donate something or get involved please email upforgoodopo@hotmail.com and I will get back to you to make arrangements.

Thank you,
Robyn

PS - If anyone would like to donate a shed to the SPCA I know it would be very welcome :)
