Whakatāne District Libraries are accepting Cans for Fines from Monday 28 November to Sunday 4 December 2016.
Donate a 410g can of food to have $2.00 taken off your overdue fines. Cans can be delivered to any of the Whakatāne, Edgecumbe, Ōhope or Murupara libraries, and all food collected … View moreWhakatāne District Libraries are accepting Cans for Fines from Monday 28 November to Sunday 4 December 2016.
Donate a 410g can of food to have $2.00 taken off your overdue fines. Cans can be delivered to any of the Whakatāne, Edgecumbe, Ōhope or Murupara libraries, and all food collected will be donated to the local food bank, with any pet food being gifted to the Whakatāne SPCA.
Please ensure all cans are not damaged or rusty.
You can donate as many cans as you like but once your applicable overdue fines have been cleared, no credit or cash will be given. The amnesty only applies to fines, not to fees or charges or lost/damaged books.
The local SPCA on Centennial Drive are keen for more people to lend a few hours volunteering.
Duties include exercising the dogs, feeding and cleaning out their living areas. Just call into the centre to learn more.

The lunch wasn't a grand affair, we had no celebs join us but I did have two responses to my request. Thank you Paul Metcalfe and friend for taking time out of your busy working day as a builder to come along and support our efforts. Thank you to others from local schools who also offered.
I would also like to add that now is a great time to get your diabetes under control and before the silly season starts! We're backing schools to set up walking buses and other solutions, with parents and volunteers helping local kids get to class safely.
We wrote to the nation's mayors pleading with them to lower speed limits outside schools, and many have come back to us with expressions of support. We talked to well-known New Zealanders with school-aged kids, and they united behind the campaign.
You can get involved too. We know people are busy, so the Sunday Star-Times and Neighbourly are encouraging families to choose one day a week when they and their kids walk, scoot, cycle - even ride a horse if that's what works for you!
I've chosen Mondays as the days I'll cycle to school with my 6-year-old son. Turangi SPCA has not had a good morning after thieves climbed over barbed wire fences to steal their puppies SPCA under the cover of darkness.

Turangi SPCA has not had a good morning after thieves climbed over barbed wire fences to steal their puppies SPCA under the cover of darkness.
SPCA manager Stacy Lewis said thieves made off with six pups early on Thursday.
They took three 10-week-old American bull terriers; Hunter, a 8-week old huntaway pup; Sandy, an 8-week old foxy/shephard cross; and Nico, a 12-week old Mastiff cross.
Lewis has made an appeal for the thieves to return the dogs either to Turangi's SPCA, 'no questions asked' or by dropping the animals into the amnesty box at Turangi pound.
