The ceremony was led by Mayor Tony Bonne, Deputy Mayor Judy Turner and Councillor Andrew Isles, and formally recognised a variety of volunteer groups who are active throughout the Whakatāne District.

In his opening remarks, the Mayor thanked all those present and all those involved in the volunteer groups, which he says play an essential role in the community and contribute hugely to the District.

"Today we have representatives from our libraries, a range of care groups, as well as the museum and gallery," the Mayor said, "and I want to thank you all for assisting our organisation to enhance and restore our natural environment, engage with the community and deliver the services it needs. Thank you for making our District a better place - I am humbled by the sheer amount of time that many of you contribute, not only for the Council, but also for a range of other local organisations."

The Whakatāne District Council will undertake a rabbit control operation between Maraetōtara Stream and Te Akau St, Ōhope, commencing on or around 14 August and continuing for up to a fortnight.

Rabbit control will be undertaken using Pindone pellets. Pindone pellets are cylindrical, cereal-based pellets approximately 1-3 cm in length and dyed green. Pellets will be placed inside specially-erected enclosures and will remain on the ground until they are eaten or decompose.

Poison Warning signs will be placed at the start of each access way, as well as at set intervals along the dunes. It is a legal requirement that the signs remain in place for eight months after bait has been removed. Please observe all signage.

For their own safety, dogs MUST be kept on leashes when walking through the dunes and should NOT be allowed to wander in or near the treatment area.

- All baits are dyed green
- Baits are deadly to dogs
- Do not touch bait
- Keep out of reach of children
- Feral animals may contain toxic residue
- Do not remove animal carcasses for dog food

HEARTLAND SPECIAL: Struck by quakes, floods and economic downturns, parts of provincial New Zealand are hurting bad. Today, they challenge New Zealand's poll-happy politicians to look beyond their cities to the 'real New Zealand'.

For 48 years Richard Ririnui has called Edgecumbe home. Now he is calling it quits on the town where he raised his six children.

His brick house at 20 Rata Avenue sits as a time capsule to the devastation the town suffered on April 6. Save for patches of wild grass, a red sticker and a now bulging lemon tree it stands exactly as it did when the flood waters subsided.
