A sewage overflow in the vicinity of Seaview Road has caused contamination of the Wairere Stream, which flows into the Whakatāne River at Quay Street.
Whakatāne District Council contractors have contained the overflow and are working to address the cause. Council staff are working with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa and Toi Te Ora Public Health to ensure the appropriate measures are in place to notify the public of the potential health risks. Signs have also been erected at relevant locations advising of the temporary health warning.
A temporary health warning has been issued for recreational water contact, and the gathering and consumption of fish and shellfish for the Wairere Stream, and the Whakatāne River from the Landing Road bridge to the Whakatāne River entrance. Water quality testing will be carried out in the coming days and the community will be advised when the public health warning is lifted.
Whakatāne District Council apologises for this sewage overflow and its impacts on both the river environment, and those who are directly affected by this.

The prolonged hot, dry weather has resulted in Whakatane using a lot more water than usual. While we’re not running out of water, our current water use means sometimes water is emptying from our reservoirs faster than our pumps can refill them.
In recent years, voluntary water use reductions have helped ensure that reservoir storage for the Whakatāne and Ōhope water supply schemes is maintained at a safe level, allowing formal restrictions on hose and sprinkler use to be avoided.

A prohibited fire season has been declared for Central Lakes, Bay Of Plenty Coast and Pumicelands.
Principal Rural Fire Officer Steve Webb says all fire permits have been suspended.
"A prohibited fire season means no fires are permitted as the fire danger is too high," Steve Webb says. "During a prohibited fire season only gas and charcoal barbeques can be used".
"Hangi are still allowed, but we are asking people planning hangi to contact us first as conditions are becoming very dry and we may want to put additional protection in place."

Steve Webb says it is vitally important that people understand the risks. In extreme conditions it only takes a spark to start a devastating wildfire. That spark can come from a piece of equipment such as a lawnmower, or a grinder, welding or a plough.
"To protect your home, keep roofs and gutters clear of dead leaves, debris and pine needles. Move anything that could burn (such as mulch, leaves, firewood piles) away from exterior walls, decks or porches."
If the current conditions persist there may be a requirement to prohibit any activities that may cause fires to start.
