I haven't (yet) found a South Island lawyer who charges less than $1500 for a probate application. Some charge $3000. (Tell me if you know differently.)
In most cases, Kiwilaw will provide the paperwork for $400. It takes about an hour, or less. That's a reasonable hourly rate for a lawyer.
$400 compared with $1500 or $3000. 100 per week. Do the math.
(If you dare, then do the math for a year.)

Heavy rain and flooding has ended the nesting season for a new colony of the world's most threatened gull in North Canterbury.

About 2500 black-billed gulls, the largest colony seen on the Ashley/Rakahiuri River for nearly two decades, had been nesting in the middle of the braided river just below the State Highway 1 bridge.

Rivercare Group chairman Nick Ledgard says more flooding last weekend proved too much for the colony. The water level became high enough to wash over all of the birds' nests and eggs. Not one gull remained at the site the following day.

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

Mayors from across Canterbury are prepared to discuss a rates contribution towards the operating costs of Christchurch's in-development stadium.

But they have "a raft of quite meaty" questions over how it would be governed and how the contributions would be divided between regions.
