Nestled away among green hills and native bush in quiet North Canterbury lies a massive, busy, but slick operation. You wouldn't know it was there unless you went looking for it, and you can't hear it or smell it, even upon arrival at the front gate.

But it is where 4.3 million tonnes of waste has been buried away from sight over the past 14 years. Some is as deep as 50 metres, but the end result looks like rolling pasture.

Amberley's controversial tyre stockpile is not the only one in Canterbury, but authorities say they have little power to get them cleaned up.

Environment Canterbury North Canterbury zone delivery manager Andrew Arps said the regional council was aware of three other large stockpiles of tyres – in Hororata, Leeston and the Ashburton area.

However, none were of a size ECan considered to be a problem, with the largest only about a tenth of the size of the Amberley stockpile.

Now he is filling a warehouse in central Christchurch with used tyres and is behind on his rent.

A community leader calls him an environmental menace and says he must be stopped. Others are concerned he will walk away from his latest tyre dump.

But Michael Benny Le Roy, 59, a double bankrupt, says he is "trying to save the planet" and has "a good name in the tyre game".

A North Canterbury charity shop is being targeted by unscrupulous people (including an on-duty bus driver) trying to get things for free, a concerned local says.

Rangiora resident Arthur Linnell said he passed his local Salvation Army store last week saw several people going through the boxes and bags of donated items. He felt it was "absolutely disgusting" that good quality items were being stolen.
