The regional council undertook the work, and Waimakariri District Council mayor Dan Gordon said the first he knew of it was once the trees had been chopped down.
However, ECan regional lead river engineer Shaun McCracken said the district council had been informed, although there had been no public notification or consultation because it was routine work. The tree-felling would “improve the resilience of Rangiora and Kaiapoi to the threat of flooding from the Ashley River’’, he said.

Regional emergency management adviser Peter Cameron presented Mike Bryce, Nikita Bryce and district councillor Kirstyn Barnett with the Ministry of Civil Defence 10-year Long Service Award at a special ceremony hosted at a Civil Defence Cadet camp in Glentui in July.
All three recipients have responded to a variety of emergencies across the South Island, including earthquakes, fires and flooding events.

He's now about to embark on a gruelling 24-hour bike ride to raise funds and awareness of the condition.
Norton is actively involved with Camp Twitch, an annual camp for children living with Tourette’s and their families.
“I want to let them know there is hope, that it doesn’t stop you achieving what you want to achieve.’’
He will start the 24-hour challenge at 7pm on August 14 using the virtual cycling platform Zwift to notch up the distance.
