Normally considered the domain of Central Otago, this year there were no Central Otago pinot noir in the Top 50, but two from North Canterbury.
North Canterbury Wine Region chair Catherine Keith, also director of Mount Brown Estates, said this was a particularly great result for the area.
“This isn’t new to North Canterbury, we’ve actually been doing it for a really long time,’’ Keith said.
“Central Otago has a massive marketing budget, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only region making good pinot noir.’’

While Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) said it was not stopping the siren altogether, it had already added a three-minute delay at night to minimise disruption to residents.
Oxford residents opposed the change and gathered nearly 1000 signatures – almost half of the town’s population of 2200 – last week to get the siren returned to normal.

The council has been warning people, since May, not to abuse the system or face losing their bin privileges, and contractors are now out in force armed with calling cards and tags for offending bins.
Solid waste asset manager Kitty Waghorn said the inspections kicked off in Pegasus on October 12, where six streets turned up 30 contaminated bins, mostly containing food – including packets of unopened steaks and donuts.
