Thousands of Waimakariri residents want the council to opt out of the Government’s three waters reform, with 95 per cent who responded to a survey on the issue saying they wanted services to be managed locally.

Under the proposed reforms, control of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure would transfer from 67 councils nationwide to four new independent entities.

One entity would cover 21 South Island councils, including all of Canterbury.

Waimakariri mayor Dan Gordon said quality drinking water and better environmental outcomes were essential, and the council did not accept the premise there was only one way to achieve this.

The Waimakariri District Council received more than 3800 submissions and just over 95 per cent stated they wanted the council to “opt-out” of the proposed reform.

Respondents wanted the three waters service “to be managed, built and operated locally by people who understand our area”.

The council will decide on the formal response that will be given to the Government at a meeting on September 28.

Instead, he will be scaling the mountain as many times as possible in 24 hours to raise money for LandSAR Oxford.

The round trip is four hours, but the 19-year-old carpentry apprentice thinks he will be able to do it more quickly, and hopes to complete the feat at least 10 times.

McDrury will take on the challenge from 6am on October 2, and has been training to ensure he is ready to hit the trails hard.

Having lived in Picton for several years I saw what can be achieved with a combination of trapping and planting natives species. Picton now has an amazing dawn chorus! There are many other stories of similar projects throughout New Zealand. I think it would be amazing if as a district we start to plan native tree corridors for our native birds and see the results in the years to come.

Another great story!
Southland father and son, Robert and Bobby Baird have recently received their forestry qualifications, proving you are never too old to learn.

While Robert has practical experience gained during four decades in the bush, he says vocational training like the qualification he has just done is helping keep people safe.

Competenz assessor Neville Muir worked with Bairds throughout their training programme.

“Bobby is very driven to succeed and very organised. He’s also very keen to continue upskilling his crew and there are a lot of different certificates still to do,” he says.

While Bobby is his boss at work, Robert turns back into ‘dad’ at the end of the day. “I give him a hand during the day when he’s got a lot of work on. We have a great relationship and it’s a magic thing to be able to do to work with your son.”
